Custom Motor Design When a Standard Motor Doesn’t Fit
Finding the right motor is not always about voltage, speed, or torque.
In many projects, the real problem comes when the motor needs to fit into an existing mechanical system. The installation space may already be fixed. The mounting holes may have a specific pattern. The output shaft may need a particular diameter, length, or connection method.
This is where a standard motor may not be the best fit.

The motor shown in these photos is an example of a customized motor assembly developed with the mechanical interface in mind. Instead of looking at the motor as a standalone component, the focus is on how it will actually be installed and connected to the rest of the machine.
When the Mechanical Interface Matters
The front of the motor uses a metal mounting flange with multiple mounting holes, providing a solid interface for installation.The output shaft is another important part of the design. When a motor is connected directly to a gearbox, gear train, actuator, or other transmission components, even a small difference in shaft dimensions can make installation difficult.
This is one reason why we often recommend looking at the complete mechanical requirement before selecting a motor.
A motor may have the correct electrical specifications, but if the mounting pattern or shaft does not match the machine, additional adapters or modifications may be required.

For projects with limited installation space, a customized motor can sometimes make the integration much simpler.
What Can Be Customized?
Customizing a motor does not necessarily mean developing an entirely new motor from the beginning.
Depending on the project, an existing motor platform can often be adapted to meet specific mechanical requirements. This may include the motor’s overall dimensions, mounting flange, output shaft, cable or connector configuration, and the way it connects to a gearbox or other transmission components.
The first step is usually quite simple: look at the customer’s drawing or installation space and understand what the motor needs to do.
From there, we can evaluate the requirements and determine which parts can be customized and which existing components can be used.
For example, a customer may already have a fixed mounting position but need a different shaft length. Another project may have very limited space and require a more compact motor body. In other cases, the motor needs to be matched with a specific gearbox to achieve the required output speed and torque.
These details are often more important than simply choosing a motor from a catalog.
