Plastic-coated 625zz wheels are an excellent, highly recommended upgrade for most 3D printers. They are a cheap and effective insurance policy for your printer's frame. The benefits of protecting your aluminum extrusions and achieving quieter operation far outweigh the downside of having to replace the wheels every few years (depending on use).
Features of 625zz Wheels
While excellent, they aren't a perfect drop-in solution for every scenario.
Durability & Wear: The plastic coating will wear out over time, especially if overtightened. This is the trade-off for protecting your aluminum frame. You will need to replace the wheels eventually, whereas metal wheels might last the life of the printer (but damage the frame).
Thermal Expansion: POM/Delrin has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than steel. In a very hot chamber (like in a high-temp enclosure), the plastic sleeve could expand and potentially bind, though this is rarely an issue for typical desktop 3D printing.
Pre-load Adjustment: The eccentric nut used to adjust the wheel's tightness against the extrusion must be set correctly.
Too Loose: The axis will have play/wobble, leading to layer shifts and poor print quality.
Too Tight: The wheel will deform, create excessive drag, wear out very quickly, and strain the stepper motor. A good rule of thumb is to tighten until the wheel no longer slips when you try to turn it by hand against the extrusion, then back off just enough so it can spin freely without any play.
Our advantages
Prevents Wear: Standard metal V-wheel bearings will eventually wear grooves into the soft aluminum extrusion. Plastic-coated wheels are much softer than aluminum, so the wheel wears instead of the expensive frame.
Quieter Operation: The plastic-on-aluminum contact is generally quieter and smoother than metal-on-aluminum, reducing high-frequency noise and "chatter."
Smoother Motion: For some printers, the slight give in the plastic can provide a smoother, less rigid ride, potentially reducing "vibration artifacts" in prints.
No Lubrication Needed: The standard steel bearings inside are sealed and lubricated for life. The plastic sleeve requires no maintenance.
Clean the Extrusions: Before installing new wheels, thoroughly clean the V-slots on your aluminum extrusions with isopropyl alcohol to remove any old dust, grease, or debris.
Check for Flat Spots: If your printer has been sitting for a long time, standard rubber-rimmed wheels can develop flat spots. Plastic-coated wheels are less prone to this, but it's still good practice to rotate them occasionally.
Adjust One at a Time: When adjusting the eccentric nuts on a carriage, adjust one wheel at a time and re-check for play/freeness of movement. They interact with each other.
These wheels are used wherever the printer moves along the aluminum extrusions:
X-Axis Gantry: Wheels that roll on the vertical extrusions.
Y-Axis Carriage: Wheels under the print bed (on bed-slinger printers like Creality Ender 3, Anycubic i3, etc.).
Z-Axis: Wheels that guide the vertical motion of the gantry (less common on modern designs, which often use lead screws directly).
